On Affect and Self-adaptation: Potential Benefits of Valence-Controlled Action-Selection

چکیده
Psychological studies have shown that emotion and affect influence learning. We employ these findings in a machine-learning metaparameter context, and dynamically couple an adaptive agent’s artificial affect to its action-selection mechanism (Boltzmann β). The agent’s performance on two important learning problems is measured. The first consists of learning to cope with two alternating goals. The second consists of learning to prefer a later larger reward (global optimum) for an earlier smaller one (local optimum). Results show that, compared to several control conditions, coupling positive affect to exploitation and negative affect to exploration has several important benefits. In the alternatinggoal task, it significantly reduces the agent’s goal-switch search peak. The agent finds its new goal faster. In the second task, artificial affect facilitates convergence to a global instead of a local optimum, while permitting to exploit that local optimum. We conclude that affect-controlled action-selection has adaptation benefits.

Affect, Anticipation and Adaptation: Affect-Controlled Selection of Anticipatory Simulation in Artifical Adaptive Agents
Emotion plays an important role in thinking. In this paper we study affective control of the amount of simulated anticipatory behavior in adaptive agents using a computational model. Our approach is based on model-based reinforcement learning (RL) and inspired by the Simulation Hypothesis (Cotterill, 2001; Hesslow, 2002). The simulation hypothesis states that thinking is internal simulation of ...

Self-incompatibility in almond and Prunus species is an important trait that prevents self-fertilization. Selfincompatibility in almond is controlled gametophytically by the multiallelic S-locus. Present study was done in order to identification and preliminary selection of self compatible progenies resulted from controlled crosses in almond using specific primer SfF/SfR. Some important morphol...
متن کاملPrinciples and Methods of Diabetes Adaptation: Review Article
Any stimulus that enters one of the dimensions of a human being puts pressure on other dimensions as well. People are constantly faced with physical, social and psychological changes in the environment and must interact with them to adapt. Diabetes disrupts the bodychr('39')s biological and psychological interaction, requiring a person to adapt to the disease. The aim of the present study was t...

Following our previous investigations on certain new aminoalkyl aryl ethers, which showed promising and outstanding local anaesthetic properties, the local anaesthetic activity and duration of action of a further selection of four novel derivatives of the above-mentioned series, used as hydrochloride salts, have been determined by the ill vivo rat sciatic nerve test. These are: N,N-dimethyl...
